Why?

Almost one in three Swedish women of reproductive age has low iron stores, yet many are told their levels are "normal", partly because ferritin reference limits for women are set lower than for men. An IV iron infusion can restore iron levels faster than tablets.

FAQ

About IV iron infusion

IV iron is only prescribed after a doctor's assessment and when your blood tests show that treatment is appropriate. It is not suitable for everyone, and your doctor will discuss the benefits, possible side effects and alternatives with you.

Your doctor will send the prescription to a pharmacy, and you'll need to pick up the medication before your infusion appointment and bring it with you. The infusion itself currently takes place at our sister clinic EndoGyn at Hötorget in Stockholm. We'll send you the address and practical details when your appointment is confirmed. The infusion usually takes 15–60 minutes, depending on the dose, followed by a short observation period.

Many women start to notice improvements in energy and fatigue within one to two weeks, although the full effect can take up to four weeks or longer. How long the effect lasts varies from person to person and depends mainly on the underlying cause, for example whether heavy menstrual bleeding continues. A follow-up blood test is usually recommended a few weeks after the infusion, and your doctor will advise whether further treatment or investigation is needed.
