About DEXA
A DEXA scan is one of the most comprehensive and accurate health assessments available. In a single examination, it measures both your bone density and your body composition, giving you a precise picture of your bone strength, muscle mass and fat distribution, including the fat around your organs.
The scan is painless, non-invasive and uses a very low dose of radiation, roughly equivalent to a few hours of natural background radiation. The whole procedure typically takes 10–20 minutes.
No special preparation is needed before a DEXA scan. You can eat and drink as normal beforehand. You should avoid taking calcium supplements on the day of the scan, as these can affect the results.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal zippers or buckles, as metal can interfere with the scan. If you have had a contrast examination or nuclear medicine scan in the past few days, let us know in advance.
If you are pregnant or think you might be, please inform us before booking.
After your scan, you will receive a detailed report showing your bone density measurements, fracture risk assessment, and a full breakdown of your body composition, including muscle mass, fat mass, and visceral fat levels.
Our team will walk you through your results and what they mean for your health. If any values fall outside the normal range, we will recommend appropriate next steps, whether that is lifestyle changes, further investigation or referral to a specialist.
